After the Thomas Fire struck Ventura and Santa Barbara counties people came together in many different ways. Neighbors knocked on doors to wake people up when the fire was rapidly approaching. So many restaurants gave food to first responders and those affected. Donations poured in and people took in their friends who had nowhere to stay. Ventura stood up after it got hit, helping those who couldn’t get back up on their own. When I returned home after evacuating I saw that someone put up positive signs all throughout the neighborhood. They said things like, “Don’t give up”, “Love”, “You can do it”, “Thank you first responders”, and “Ventura Strong”. Ventura strong is all of these things, including the idea of everyone gathering at this event because you can’t burn down love and you can’t burn down music. Ventura cannot be burned down. Because we are a community and we are strong.
The day was February third, 2018. It was an incredible honor to stand next to these people, some who lost their homes, some who fought the fire, friends, neighbors, people who came together and danced because that’s what we needed to do. It was a pleasure, as well, to take all these pictures. As I look at them the feeling of compassion that was so strong at the event washes over me again.

Colbie grew up in Ventura county. Somehow she is even prettier in real life than in her pictures!
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
This band started right in Ventura! It’s always a fun time with them!! It’s hard to sit still when they’re playing, ya gotta have your dancing shoes on.
Olivia Newton John
Olive Newton John is an angel. She was all smiles the whole time. My mom saw her perform when she was in junior high and it meant ta lot to both of us that we got to see her together. And yes, she sand songs from Grease; I was so excited!!!
Kevin Costner & Modern West
And of course, Kevin Costner! The actor used to live in Ventura and it’s still very special to him. He had many heartwarming things to say and even got choked up talking about this place we call home.
