A series of hitchhiking, train, and bus rides took us from Venice to Lugano, Switzerland. We quickly realized that Switzerland is a bit more expensive and this revelation left us wandering around for a night, without wifi, and unable to find cheap accommodation. The scenery, however, was gorgeous, and by the next night we found a hostel to stay at.
It was a climb, but the view from the hostel was a great one.
A fellow wary traveler, perhaps.
We spent a lot of time by the lake.
The morning light was my favorite.
The hostel was a little pricier than those in Germany and Italy, but one of the perks was a free public transportation ticket. So we took the train as north as we could within the limits of the free tickets and made it to Airolo, Switzerland. It looked a little like this…
It was a gorgeous, yet small town. Normally it would have been a really quiet day, maybe not so great for hitchhiking, but there was a bad semi-truck crash on the freeway. The accident caused everyone on the road to detour through town. This is the first of multiple bad situations we’ve encountered on this trip that would end up benefiting us. It didn’t take long for someone to pull over and ask where we were going.
“Geneva,” we told him.
“Geneva? You should come with me to Zurich instead.”
So we did.
And you can read about that here.
